The health of Cam Newton was an obvious concern for the Carolina Panthers this offseason. After undergoing shoulder surgery in January, Newton has yet to throw a pass. So, during the third round of the NFL Draft, the Panthers selected West Virginia quarterback Will Grier, leaving many questioning what exactly that means for Newton, mainly in the immediate present. The 2015 NFL MVP spoke about the selection on Thursday with heavy praise for Grier, stating that he will definitely do whatever he can to help him out.

Newton is very familiar with Grier, who’s a native of Davidson, N.C. Grier was a frequent attendee of Panthers games, and Newton watched him play football in high school, so the connection is already there.
Grier is the perfect contingency plan in case Newton’s shoulder injury proves to be worse than initially thought. Last season, Grier threw for 3,864 yards and 37 touchdowns on a 67.0% completion percentage, resulting in the quarterback finishing fourth in Heisman voting.
No matter where you stand on Newton, it’s clear the Panthers have never had a backup for him that registered as up to snuff. This solves that issue in a major way. Even if he never sees the field for Carolina, Grier can’t ask for a more knowing mentor than Newton. What’s not to like?

While many thought there could be beef between the two quarterbacks (isn’t there always?), Cam Newton squashed it, saying he’s going to fully support him as a teammate this upcoming season.
